Is the Diploma programme for me?
The Diploma Programme (DP) could be a great fit if you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding experience. The DP offers a balanced curriculum that includes various subjects allowing you to explore your interests while preparing for university.
The programme emphasises critical thinking and independent learning, giving you opportunities to engage in discussions, conduct research, and work on projects. Unique components like the Extended Essay let you dive into a topic you’re passionate about, while Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) encourages involvement in creative projects and community service.
While the DP is academically rigorous, you’ll have support from teachers and peers. Since instruction is conducted in English, it’s important that you feel comfortable with the language, but you don’t have to be fluent to apply. The preparatory year will give you plenty of time and opportunities to practice. If you enjoy learning, are ready to challenge yourself, and want to grow personally, the IB Diploma Programme could be an excellent choice for you!
Curriculum
Preparatory year, PreIB
Before starting the Diploma Programme (DP) at Per Brahegymnasiet, students go through a preparatory year, called PreIB. This year helps you build a strong foundation in subjects like math, science, languages, and humanities. It acts as a bridge to the IB curriculum and allows you to explore various subjects, helping you decide which courses you want to take in the DP. Most of the subjects follow the Swedish upper secondary curriculum.
The Diploma Programme
The second year of school you will start the IB Diploma programme, which is made up of six subject groups and the DP core. You choose one subject from each group to ensure a broad education. You can opt to study some subjects at higher level (HL) and others at standard level (SL). Below is the list of subjects we offer at Per Brahegymnasiet.

The DP core
The six subjects are complemented by the DP core. It consist of three key components that together enhance the educational experience and promote personal growth.
- CAS – Creativity, Activity, Service
CAS involves participating in creative activities, physical activity, and community service. The aim is to help you develop as an individual and learn how to work with others while contributing positively to society. - TOK – Theory of Knowledge
TOK is about understanding how we know what we know. This course encourages you to think critically and reflect on the nature of knowledge. You'll discuss and analyse different ways of understanding the world, which helps you gain a deeper understanding of various perspectives. - EE – Extended Essay
The Extended Essay is an independent, self-directed research project, culminating in a paper. This component allows you to explore a topic of personal interest in depth, developing your research and academic writing skills. It's a valuable preparation for university-level studies.
Final exams
At the end of the program, you will take final exams in each of your subjects. The exams are standardised and designed to assess your understanding and ability to apply what you have learned over the two-year program. They are externally graded and play a significant role in your final IB diploma score. Final exams are written during a three-week period in May of the final year. While final exams are just one aspect of your education and your journey toward the future, they provide valuable experience for further studies.
Assessment system
The assessment system of the IB Diploma Programme (DP) includes a mix of internal and external evaluations. Each subject is graded on a scale from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest.
External assessments consist of the final exams taken at the end of the programme, which are standardised and graded by external examiners.
Internal assessments are projects, presentations, or practical work completed during the course, and these are graded by your teachers.
Additionally, students complete the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) essay, the Extended Essay (EE), and the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements, which also contribute to the overall diploma outcome.
Graduation
Graduation takes place on two occasions. First at the graduation ceremony in June, together with the students at the national programs. Then, at the end of August, IB diplomas are distributed at a formal ceremony in our auditorium, Brahesalen.
